Why Malta - About Malta & Gozo
The Maltese islands are located in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, some 93 kilometers south of Sicily and 300 kilometers away from North Africa. The archipelago consists of distinct islands: Malta, Gozo, and Comino. Malta is an easily accessible destination that can be reached by both air and sea from most major ports of call and European airports. Its climate has all the marks of its Mediterranean location—long, luxuriously warm summers and exceptionally mild winters. Malta has a long historical trading back ground stretching from 5600 B.C, to the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Normans, the Arabs, the Knights of St. John, the French, the British till gaining Independence in 1964. The society, as a result, is very open to outside cultures and carries a cosmopolitan spirit.
Malta’s sister island, Gozo, offers a different experience. This charming island is a verdant landscape where the pace of its rural community provides a welcome respite to wearied travelers. Gozo is a place of beauty and myth. It is thought to be the home of Calypso, the legend from Homer’s Odyssey. Across the rugged, green landscapes, you will find picturesque Baroque churches and ancient stone farmhouses scattered everywhere. On Gozo’s fabulous coastlines, there are plenty of opportunities to get your feet wet in some of the Mediterranean’s best diving locations. Brimming with amazing historical sites, including the astounding prehistoric temple, Ggantija, Gozo also provides an exciting and unique nightlife as well as many cultural dining experiences.
