Why Malta - Banks & Currency

As of 1st January 2008, the nation of Malta officially adopted the Euro as its currency. A month later on 1st February 2008, the Euro was declared the only legal tender currency in Malta and Gozo. If you would like more information on the Maltese currency transfer, please go to www.euro.gov.mt.

Banks in Malta operate from morning to early afternoon from Monday to Friday, and close around midday on Saturdays.  It is possible to find some banking institutions or branches open for longer hours. Depending upon the season when you are visiting the island there may also be differences between summer and winter opening hours.

If you wish to exchange currencies, the Exchange bureaux at Malta International Airport are convenient sites do so since they are open 24 hours a day. Not only can international bankcards be used at these locations, but foreign currency can be easily exchanged.  Banks, ATMs, and exchange bureaux can be found at different locations all across the islands. Foreign travelers should note that most of the hotels, larger shops, and restaurants accept payment from those using the main international currencies.  If payment is accepted in other currencies, you should be prepared to pay conversion charges since most of these same outlets apply these charges.

According to the guidelines for monitoring money entering or exiting the country adopted by the EU, those persons entering or leaving Malta carrying currency or other monetary value equal to or greater than €10,000 (or equivalent) should fill out a declaration form from Customs.
