Why Malta - Climate

The Maltese climate is largely affected by the sea and the Mediterranean region. The islands enjoy a sunny climate, averaging between five to six hours of daylight during mid-winter and more than twelve hours in summer.

The winters in Malta are mild, with short, chilly periods that are created by the movement of the north and northeasterly winds from central Europe. Summers on the other hand, are hot, dry, and extremely sunny. Cool sea breezes occasionally balance out and provide relief from daytime temperatures. In autumn, hot winds from Africa called Scirocco (or Xlokk in Maltese) may cause increased humidity and higher temperatures than is typical for the season.

The average annual rainfall in Malta is about 578 millimeters, a very low amount. The islands’ dry season is longer than that of its neighbour, Italy. This means that if you enjoy sea bathing, you may do so well into the autumn months. In fact, the busy season for many beaches may last until mid-to late October.
